Message from Helena

"A dragonfly symbolises renewal, change, positive energy and the power of life in general.
Dragonflies also represent the sense of self that comes with maturity.
A dragonfly has a short life and so must live life to the full with the short time it has.
May you too find these things through the practice of Healing Yoga."

Tuition Offered

Tuition

Healing Yoga (Peterborough) offers the following services, click on the bullet point below for further details:

How it works

Individual Tuition

Individual tuition is aimed at developing a practice for you in line with your own personal needs and goals.  This is the traditional way in which yoga was taught and it remains the most effective form of tuition as it honours the unique identity of each individual.  Think of it as giving you a bespoke tailored suit rather than an off the peg garment that doesn’t quite fit!

You will be asked to fill in a detailed initial questionnaire which covers your health, lifestyle and personal goals.  You will then have a 30 minute assessment to discuss this more fully and to assess your posture and breathing ready for beginning practice.  All information given is kept confidential.  You will need to wear loose, comfortable clothing and at this session you will be advised of any yoga equipment necessary for your practice.

At the first practice session you will be taught a practice for you to take home and work with regularly until the next meeting when we will review, adapt or develop your practice as appropriate.  You will also have an opportunity to ask questions and to give your insights into the effectiveness of the practice.

Yoga is about gradually changing habits and patterns in the body, mind and breath and so you are asked to commit yourself to a minimum of 4 sessions over a 3 month period to give the practice time to work.   Lots of students find the personal and spiritual development that yoga practice offers so helpful that they continue to come for many years!

Individual Tuition is offered by Healing Yoga (Peterborough) in the tutor’s home near central Peterborough.  The yoga room is accessible for wheelchair users.

Group Tuition

Healing Yoga (Peterborough) offers groups classes as follows:

Tuesdays 7.15-8.30pm (General)

Wednesdays 7.30-8.45pm (Advanced – by invitation only)

Fridays 9.30-10.45am (General)

All classes take place at All Saints Church Hall, Park Road, Peterborough PE1 2UJ

Pregnancy Yoga – Nurturing you and your baby

Yoga offers a perfect start for a new life – your baby’s life and your new life as a mother.  Yoga in pregnancy can:

  • Promote restful sleep
  • Boost energy
  • Support good posture
  • Relieve aches and pains
  • Balance the emotions
  • Prepare the body and mind for labour
  • Improve concentration
  • Help you bond with your baby

Individual tuition is offered to support pregnant women and no initial assessment is needed.  However you will need to fill in a health questionnaire before starting.  Healing Yoga (Peterborough) offers safe tuition to all pregnant women including those experiencing difficult pregnancies due to medical or emotional causes.

You may start from 14 weeks and continue up to delivery in most cases.  Tuition may be anything from weekly to monthly according to what suits you.  The sessions are legally classed as ante-natal appointments which means you are entitled to time off work by law to attend.
( ).
Until April 2011 the Government is offering £190 to all pregnant women in their 25th week of pregnancy through the Health in Pregnancy Grant.

Masterclasses
Masterclasses are offered every three months for yoga teachers, student teachers and experienced practitioners of yoga. They take a theme and link to that theme through study of yoga philosophy as well as asana, pranayama and medititative practices. They seek to be nurturing, informative and reflective.

Chanting

Chanting is healing and meditative and, unlike singing, there are only three notes making it accessible to everyone.  No musical ability is required – if you can speak you can chant!

Two types of chanting are offered:

  • Yoga Sutra chanting is for you if you would like to learn this ancient text in Sanskrit in the traditional way.  This is the best way to find heart rather than head understanding of yoga philosophy.  Chanting can be combined with study of the sutras.
  • Vedic Chanting is for you if you would like to learn more about ancient Indian wisdom or if you would like to find a means to help focus the mind and clear the head, improve diction (in your own language), relieve stress, improve memory, confidence and listening skills as well as to help with conditions such as stammering and dribbling.

“To share Vedic Chant is to share
an experience of silence through listening,
a process of healing, and a link with nature,
the deeper self and the divine.”  TKV Desikachar

Mentoring for Yoga Teachers

As a KHYF certified teacher Helena is specifically trained to assist yoga teachers with their personal development both in relation to their yoga practice and to their teaching of others. Mentoring offers a safe confidential space to discuss teaching and personal issues as well as to assist the teacher with deepening their yoga practice and in developing a relationship to yoga philosophy in the practical aspects of their life.

Yoga Philosphy Study

Study of the ancient philosophical texts can be undertaken as an individual or in groups. It can be done through reading, discussion and chanting as well as through a yoga practice to help deepen understanding of the texts. A regular study group takes place monthly on Friday evenings. Helena is willing to teach to other small groups by arrangement.

Yoga and Spiritual Direction for Christians

Helena offers space for people to explore their prayer life and spirituality. She has a lot of experience of working with people who have lost their faith or who are disenchanted by church. She offers an open heart and mind to all those who are seeking and is adept at helping people to find a prayer life that is enriching.

Labyrinth Walking

Labyrinth walking is an ancient form of meditation. Helena has a large canvas labyrinth on which to guide others in this practice. Generally schools, churches, yoga groups and others book her to lead a workshop but from time to time she offers labyrinth walks within her yoga workshops.

Seminars

Seminars and talks can be tailored to the needs of your yoga groups or your organisation.  Seminars are offered to yoga teachers and students as well as to other groups such as doctors, physiotherapists, counsellors, nurses etc.
Some examples of previous seminars are:

  • Yoga and Stress
  • Yoga and Breast Cancer
  • Yoga and MS

  • Yoga’s Holistic View of the Person
  • An introduction to Yoga Philosophy
  • Yoga and Food
  • Yoga and Money

  •

Yoga is taught in schools by arrangement.  It is often taught as part of the emotional intelligence curriculum.  Teachers can also be taught yoga techniques to help their pupils to become calmer and more focussed.
Outside schools yoga is taught to children on a one to one basis only.  No assessment is needed apart from a talk with the parent on the telephone beforehand.
